Amitabh Bachchan Recalls A Special Hack Used By His 'Reshma Aur Shera' Co-Star, Waheeda Rehman

Amitabh Bachchan credits co-star, Waheeda Rehman for her special makeup hack during shooting

In the recent episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati 15, Amitabh Bachchan, while interacting with a contestant on the hot seat, delved onto the topic of makeup, in particular reference to women. The actor, who worked with Waheeda in a number of films such as Kabhie Kabhi, Reshma Aur Shera, Namak Halal among others, shared how the former used to carry a small compact case of makeup during the shooting of her films. Moreover, he also took a dig at some other actors whom he has seen in his film career, who require four people just to hold a mirror in front of them before going for a shot. In his words:

“Waheeda ji has her favourite compact that she uses to do all her makeup. She keeps that little compact with her all the time. There are many such actors who keep four people just to hold their mirror because they always want a full-size mirror before going for the shot, they need to see everything, makeup, outfit, and all are perfect.”

When a mob of students stopped Waheeda Rehman and Raj Kapoor’s train

During the ’60s, there was a lot of craze around celebrities as fans would wait for hours just to get a glimpse of them. However, Waheeda faced a horrific incident when a mob of students stopped her train just to see her. In the book Conversations With Waheeda Rehman, the actress shared an incident when she was travelling back after her shoot with Raj Kapoor.

Waheeda was shooting with the legendary actor, Raj Kapoor for Teesri Kasam in Bina, Madhya Pradesh, when the actress encountered the most terrifying fan encounter. Speaking about the same, she revealed that after the shooting, she was getting to leave the city via train. Waheeda was accompanied by Raj Kapoor, her sister, and her hairdresser. When the crowd went into a frenzy to meet Waheeda Rehman

At first, they thought it might be a technical glitch but later realised that a crowd of students had gathered at the station just to get a glimpse of the actress. Narrating the same, Waheeda shared:

“Finally, we looked out of the compartment window to see what was going on. The railway station at Bina was very small and on either side of the train, we could see huge crowds of students on the platforms. Then we heard people shouting, Utro, utro, dekhna hai, dekhna hai’.”

Someone told Raj Kapoor that the students wanted to watch the shooting of Teesri Kasam, but were repeatedly given the wrong address. They bunked classes for the same but could not find anyone at the given location. Hence, after repeated failed attempts, the students were adamant about seeing the celebs. Hearing this Raj Kapoor went out to meet them but told them that Waheeda won’t come out.

Raj’s reasons didn’t go down well with the students, and they warned the actor that Waheeda must see her fans or else they won’t let the train move. Recalling how the crowd went into a frenzy, Waheeda shared:

“The crowd became furious and started hurling stones and hitting the train with big iron bars. They did not let the train move an inch. We had to duck down in our compartments to avoid being hurt while Rajji was getting more and more enraged. He wanted to go out and confront the crowd. His friends tried to restrain him and, when they realised they couldn’t, they pushed him into our compartment and said, ‘Ladies! Take care of him. He has gone wild.’”

“The three of us had to literally pin Rajji on to the seat. I sat on his chest while my sister held on to his legs. He became red as a tomato and tried to wriggle out of our grip while we were struggling to keep him down. We kept imploring him, ‘No, Rajji, no!’ To which he protested, ‘Let me go! Let me go!’”

Waheeda Rehman loved experimenting with her roles and won the National Film Award for Best Actress for the film, Reshma Aur Shera in 1971.
