Music, the universal language of emotions, has long been recognized for its power to soothe the soul and elevate the spirit. But beyond its aesthetic appeal, music also holds a profound influence on our mental well-being. A recent study conducted on higher education students delved into the intricacies of this relationship, examining the impact of music education on mental health and the moderating role of emotional intelligence.
The study, conducted by researchers at Chinese universities, recruited 265 graduate students pursuing degrees in music education. Utilizing a non-probability convenience sampling technique, the researchers collected and analyzed data from students across various public and private institutions. The data was gathered online through emails, ensuring continued participation despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
To assess the impact of music education on mental health, the researchers employed the partial least squares (PLS)–structural equation modeling (SEM) technique, a robust analytical tool that allows for the examination of complex relationships among multiple variables. The findings revealed a significant positive effect of music education on students’ mental health, indicating that engagement in music education contributes positively to overall well-being.
